I know I always say ‘this book is unlike anything I’ve ever read’ but this book totally is! It’s opened me up to a sub-genre that gets my pulse racing and my heart squeezing.

Title: Hungry Like The Wolf
Author: Paige Tyler
Publish Date: January 6th 2015
Pages: 352
Series: SWAT: Special Wolf Alpha Team
Blurb
The Dallas SWAT team is hiding one helluva secret . . . they’re a pack of wolf shifters.
The team of elite sharpshooters is ultra-secretive—and also the darlings of Dallas. This doesn’t sit well with investigative journalist Mackenzie Stone. They must be hiding something . . . and she’s determined to find out what.
Keeping Mac at a distance proves impossible for SWAT team commander Gage Dixon. She’s smart, sexy, and makes him feel alive for the first time in years. But she’s getting dangerously close to the truth—and perilously close to his heart…
My Review
If I’m going to be totally honest, when I first saw this book I thought; poorly written, male dominated and short. I can’t tell you why I felt that way but I read the blurb anyway to see if it would appeal to me. For most my life, I’ve had a fascination with anything supernatural and I’ve loved reading supernatural romance novels in the past so when I read this blurb, I was intrigued. I downloaded and read this book within a couple of days.
Let’s start on a positive note. Things I loved about this book;
- More often than not, I’ll finish a standalone novel feeling unsatisfied. I either feel as though the story lacked the depth it could have or I feel frustrated that the author has written an epilogue where the characters are married and have two kids, all within three pages. However, when I finished reading this book I felt content and happy to put it down. Now that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it, I just felt as though the book had reached a natural end. Some may argue that the art of storytelling is to leave the reader wanting more but nothing infuriates me more than finishing a book feeling confused and longing for more that I’m never going to get.

- My process of finding a book is usually to scroll through romance novels on iBooks, read the blurb, download it and go, go, go. However, this time I downloaded the book and didn’t have the opportunity to read it until a week or so later. At this point, I’d forgotten the blurb and just started reading. I was instantly drawn in and caught up in the pages and I think this is because I didn’t have any expectations or assumptions. This is something I’m going to try more of in the future, reading a book without knowing/remembering the blurb because it feels more organic.

- This book has some serious spice in it! Now I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read it yet but with werewolves come heightened senses, one of which is smell… Gage (and the other werewolves) being able to smell Mackenzie when she’s hot under the collar was so steamy to read and ever since finishing this, I’ve been craving more of it. But searching ‘books where werewolves can smell arousal’ doesn’t quite seem acceptable to search in google!

- The writer really managed to bring the reader along with the characters as they fell in love and it felt organic and cute! It can sometimes feel rushed and forced but Paige Tyler made it feel dreamy.

- The final thing I loved about this book was the ‘brotherhood’ of the SWAT team. I really got a sense of the connection the guys had and it was lovely to read. I’m OBSESSED with the fact that there are 8 books in total, all about the different SWAT team members and I can’t wait to read some more in the future!
Now that the good stuff is out of the way, onto the bits I didn’t quite love;
- I know that I said I felt content with the ending and I do but I would’ve loved a little more back story with Zak. His character and relationship with Mackenzie really intrigued me and I would’ve loved reading a chapter or two on their history.

- I felt as though Mackenzie was very strong throughout the book which felt empowering to read but I think the story would’ve benefited from some weakness. Mackenzie getting hurt and Gage nursing her, for example, would’ve been delicious to read (and yes I say delicious).
My favourite part, SUGAR AND SPICE TIME!

Hungry Like The Wolf is the first book I’ve read from Paige Tyler and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was hooked from the first page and the spice had me turning the pages faster than I could read it! I am definitely going to be checking out the other books in the series so keep your eyes peeled for more reviews. I would recommend this book to someone who like me, is fascinated with supernatural spins on romance novels but isn’t necessarily looking for sunshine and daisies. The sugar is there but the spice dominates!
